Ikea Design Award 2017
The name of my projects is „Alma“. This is a Spanish word and means Soul. This project tries to transport some of my culture and my cultural soul in to my new home. The geometry of „Alma“ is inspired by my grandmother traditional hat. She is a woman from the mountains of Perú and the women there wear these hats as part of the jewelry of their families. Each hat has a large rosette that describes the family status of every woman.I developed the geometric shape of this rosette and placed it in a new context. As decor for a porcelain service, I can transport my cultural roots into my everyday life.
Furthermore, being an object that is used in everyday life it also reminds me of the great hospitality and wonderfully varied cuisine of my home country. The technique used to make each part of the service is the classic manufacturing process of porcelain. The technique I developed, allows me to transfer the decoration into the porcelain with a laser. Through this technique the decor becomes, after the glazing process, much more resistance. Also in this sense a combination of traditional and modern.
